Sportswear manufacturer PUMA has partnered with the renowned MVP Track Club, whose roster includes several of the world’s best athletes, like Olympic silver medalist Shericka Jackson and national 400m record holder Rusheen McDonald, the only Jamaican to run below 44 seconds for the one-lap sprint.
The news comes after last week’s revelation that long-time head coach Stephen Francis was stepping down after 19 years at the helm.
His brother Paul, will assume head coaching duties while Stephen will focus on providing private coaching to select athletes.
“We look forward to this new partnership led by Head Coach Paul Francis and the exciting opportunities athletes will continue to have as they pursue their athletic goals,” the club said in a statement Monday.
There was a sign of things to come in January this year when PUMA signed seven MVP athletes, Jackson, World Championships medal winner O'Dayne Richards, Janieve Russell, Christania Williams, Julian Forte, McDonald and Megan Simmonds.
“PUMA is constantly creating partnerships with athletes, clubs and federations from the fastest countries around the world,” a statement from PUMA said.
“There is no other nation that embodies speed better than Jamaica, which helps communicate and reiterate PUMA’s core statement as a performance brand. There is a long history of the brand’s involvement in Jamaica, including everything from grassroots events to sponsoring many of the main Jamaican high schools, Jamaican Athletics Federation, and Jamaica Olympic Association.”
Founded in 1999, MVP Track & Field Club is arguably the most successful track & field club in Jamaica. The Track Club was established to provide Jamaican athletes with the opportunity at track & field training and serve as an option for those coming out of Jamaican high schools, giving the athletes the opportunity to continue developing their skills.
PUMA-sponsored athlete Asafa Powell spent most of his career training at MVP and became one of its early major internationally acclaimed stars.
