Zimbabwe's military seized control of state television and the international airport and launched operations to subdue what it called the country's "degenerating" political establishment, even as it denied it was ousting longtime leader President Robert Mugabe.
After a night in the capital punctuated by multiple explosions and gunshots near the president's residence, a senior military officer read a statement on state television saying that the military was targeting criminals and that Mr. Mugabe and his family were safe.
