Auto: from "Game to Garage" Audi races Forward with E-tron

Automaker Audi is racing toward the future in spectacular style. Specifically, the brand just introduced a working version of their new e-tron Vision Gran Turismo concept car. Originally developed for virtual racing on PlayStation 4, the all-electric Formula E speed demon will make its real life debut as a race taxi in Rome on April 14. Rocking a lightweight body and aerodynamic profile, Audi’s latest is the quintessence of sleek.

Gamers worldwide are all too familiar with the best-selling Gran Turismo video game franchise, which has been churning out instalments to a rapturous fanbase for years. It was for a 15th anniversary ‘Vision Gran Turismo’ contest that Audi initially conceived the e-tron. A full-scale version was then built and presented at trade shows to similarly enthusiastic reception. While Audi was not the only brand to flesh out their Gran Turismo concept car, they are the first to set a fully functional version loose on a real-world race track.

Modelled after the groundbreaking Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO, the e-tron Vision Gran Turismo hosts electric e-tron quattro all-wheel drive with variable power distribution. Thrusting the car forward are three electric motors–two driving the rear axle and a third driving the front axle–which offer individual outputs of 200kW each. Also featured is supremely lightweight bodywork and a power-to-weight ratio of 1.78 kilograms, enabling 50:50 weight distribution between the front and rear axle. Going from 0 to 62 mph in under 2.5 seconds, the striking car is a futuristic dream come true. Look for it out on the track at all European Formula E races in 2018.
