"Stone"
that's the first word that comes out the mouth of a corn-rowed, beady-eyed Edward Norton in the Melvillesque opening to this abrasive but ultimately likeable drama pitting Norton as a dangerous con weeks away from parole against De Niro, his parole officer who is himself days away from retirement.
Although in the mix is Stone's wife, Lucetta, played by Milla Jovovich, though its hard to say with any accuracy whose side she's on
The premise seems simple enough, Stone ans his wife collude to "influence" Mabry(De Niro) toward a favourable recommendation thereby ending his 8 years incarceration. But the officer, of course, has his own closetful of skeletons and the proverbial heat (fuelled by a Bible fundamentalist broadcast that rund through the movie) goes up when she finally lands him in her lair. Dtone has been developing some spiritual and metaphysical ideas of his own and he and his beloved become increasingly estranged. Norton, even heavy on the ebonics, is as compelling as ever, and just try taking your eyes off Jovovich. All told, a combustible mix well handled.
