Prime
Minister Allan Chastanet has announced the festival, which has drawn
visitors from all over the world to the Eastern Caribbean island for the
past 25 years, has been scrapped because the $14 million price tag for
the two-week event was just too much.
The
well-known event is being replaced by a Summer Festival – a series of
events that will include not only music, but food and arts.
It
will begin in May with a Jazz Week, include an expanded St Lucia
Carnival, and culminate with the Creole and Heritage Festival in
November.
This writer had the pleasure of experiencing the St Lucia jazz Fest (and the wonderful hospitality of the St Lucia Tourist Board) back in 2004, when the line-up included Ravi Coltrane Quartet, Ben Riley's Monk Legacy band, Chris Botti, The Isley Brothers, New Edition, Barbara Cadet and others
