Kingston, July 25, 2017 - Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange(left, above with former Prime minister Edward Seaga and current Tourism minister Ed Bartlett), says that she is looking forward to Devon House with a newly expanded ice-cream parlour and other developments there becoming one of the main locations for authentic Jamaican food.
“This part of our culture – our food – presents tremendous opportunities for our nation. Food is big business, especially in the entertainment and hospitality sectors.” Minister Grange said at the Official Opening of the new Devon House I Scream yesterday (Monday).
The Minister pointed out that according to the World Tourism Organisation “more people are travelling to a destination to experience the food.” This she says means that there is “yet another great opportunity for us to use an element of our culture to deliver prosperity to our people.”
In highlighting the value of Devon House, Minister Grange said that its magnetic appeal is more than the well-built mansion with beautifully restored rooms, antique furniture and lovely decorations.
“There is just something about this place – this national monument. It has a magnetic appeal, that makes everything, including ice cream, better. Devon House is part of our rich Jamaican heritage. The Devon House brand is as Jamaican as Ackee and Saltfish and Rice and Peas.” Minister Grange said.
