World Affairs: Defying US threats, Venezuela's Maduro Deploys Assemby

Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro formally enacted the Constituent Assembly, paving the way for elections come July 30th.

The move, with some 6000 candidates  deployed across the country, comes in the face of sanctions threatened against the Maduro regime by US President Donald Trump.

The call to the Constituent Assembly has been responded to by thousands of mostly working class Venezuelans, a counterpoint to the images of protest against the Government that have dominated the regional and international media.

Campaigning closed today, withe over 6000 coming out of a total 55000 who applied and registered for the Assembly.
