Ministers Grange and Henry to speak
Kingston, October 9 – The Honourable Olivia Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and the Honourable Mike Henry, Minister of Transport and Mining, representing the Prime Minister, the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, will be speaking at the launch of the Centre for Reparations Research (CRR) at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona tomorrow afternoon October 10.
While Mr. Henry will represent the Prime Minister at the CRR launch, Minister Grange will be speaking as the Minister under whose Ministry the National Council of Reparations falls.
The Council of Reparations is co-chaired by UWI Professor of History, Verene Shepherd and Mrs Laleta Mattis Davis, Chairman of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.
Professor Shepherd will head the CRR.
The Centre for Reparation Research at the UWI was mandated by Heads of Government of CARICOM at the 24th Meeting of CARICOM Heads in July 2013. The idea for the Centre emerged out of the need to support the CARICOM/Global Reparatory Justice Movement, build awareness, engage advocacy and conduct research which will advance the claim to Europeans for various forms of reparation for native genocide, African enslavement, deceptive indentureship, colonialism and its legacies.
Tomorrow’s launch function starts at 5:30 p.m.
