Sports: Winning Jamaica Rugby Sevens team Gets Support from Patty Company

UK-based Jamaica Patty Company, main sponsors of the Jamaican Rugby Union, has lauded the Jamaica rugby team for its recent success in Mexico.

The Sevens team created history by winning the Rugby Americas North Sevens Championship 2017 in Mexico and consequently qualified for the World Cup Rugby Sevens, Hong Kong Sevens, Commonwealth Games — which will be held on the Gold Coast in Australia in April — and Central American and Caribbean Sport Organization Games.

The Jamaican Rugby Union is the first sports sponsorship undertaken by Jamaica Patty Company (JPC), and its Co-Principal Theresa Roberts was delighted with the team's success. “I am so proud to be a part of this journey. When approached, I knew instantly that I wanted JPC to get involved. I am delighted that our support has had such [a] positive impact so quickly,” she said.

Roberts added: “The squad is made up of dedicated and professional young men who have made enormous physical and financial sacrifices to represent Jamaica so well on the world stage. I was also particularly pleased to be able to help the Jamaican U19 squad whose progress will benefit greatly from this win.”

Jamaica-born Briton, Theresa Roberts and husband Andrew invested US$500,000 ($53.7 million) to start a Jamaican patty franchise in the UK with an aim to open up to 50 retail stores in the European country.

A patty is typically filled with spices and meat — traditionally beef, but chicken, vegetables, shrimp, lobster, soy and ackee patties are not uncommon — with a flaky coating.
