Live Music: JT's SuperBowl return was All Flash and Little Sizzle

Justin Timberlake needed the help of a dead icon to bring a semblance of relevance and impact to an otherwise underwhelming Halftime Show at SuperBowl LII in Minneapolis.

The Man of the Woods singer opened with the first single from his fifth solo album “Filthy” as he made his way from an inside stage into the open stadium. He then went into “Rock Your Body” - the song that he famously tore Jackson’s costume off to in the 2004 - a move which seemed designed to rub Jackson’s face - along with those of her fans - into the fact that she was not present.
He followed “SeƱorita” interlude and then a full band performance of “Sexy Back,” transitioning into a borderline EDM version of “My Love” and an operatic “Cry Me a River.” The “special moment” of the night was supposed to be a video tribute sing-a-long performance to Prince who appeared singing on a screen behind Timberlake.
But, despite covering the US Bank Dome in purple light and the famous "glyph" symbol that the late singer used during his dispute with record company Warner Bros. Timberlake couldn't really deliver any substantial heft or engagement, and the ending, with his feel-good radio smash, "can't Stop The Feeling" was more a relief than an uplift.
The performance was also affected by "indifferent" sound mixing, Timberlake's vocals on the opening song "Filthy" being pretty much drowned out by the dual instrumentation of his own band (The Tennessee Kids) and a marching band.
