Arts: Ceramist Gene Pearson Suffers Massive Stroke

-The Jamaica Observer

CERAMIC artist and sculptor Gene Pearson is currently a patient in a Corporate Area hospital having suffered what has been described by a close friend as a “massive stroke”.

“He is in hospital since Sunday and we're praying for him,” said a family friend, who wished not to be identified.

The situation is compounded with the death of Pearson's wife, Jacquelyne Hussey-Pearson. She reportedly collapsed and died on Tuesday, after battling cancer for some time. The two were estranged and are parents to a 14-year-old son.

In 2015, Pearson was awarded the Order of Distinction — Commander Class, for his contribution to the development of the fine arts in Jamaica. This was an upgrade to the Officer Class designation he had received some years prior.

Born in Wood Hall, St Catherine, the same community with spawned Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, Pearson stressed that having started out without much made him very open to new ideas once he moved to city Kingston in the early 1960s.

Best known for his sculptures of heads and masks, Pearson explained the genesis of his signature works.
