Poetry: SHOPPING DAY

Electric doors yield
as
electric eyes
follow
the passage of' pastel coloured
running shoes
sandals
bags in every shape and hue and
Kids
of all ages
Outside cars play their
version
of musical chairs
in the parking lot
Out of many One
personified
lesser and
greater
leaders and those whom
they
lead
feeding both need and
greed
Some there
for the show - as if sterile glass and wood and plastic have taken on
the feel of Broadway - Others simply
are
Others fearthe
scrutiny
even as exposed
backsides declare the lie of
Confidence
and bulging breasts and tight
Vs
write the fiction of
boldness
daring
us to deny them the
attention
they so crave
And as the sun
slips beyond the stoic
hills
and stadium-style lamps
leap
to fill the void
the vested
"Cart-wheelers"
tot up the day's largesse
and breathe
thankful sighs knowing
that for another week
mouths may be fed
dimmer lamps will
light ghetto rooms and
feet may be
shod
with pastel
Trainers
