Auto: Bimmer "Electrifies" the SUV

BMW has been pushing to establish itself in the electric vehicle market, and the BMW Concept iX3 definitely looks to fortify that position. The iX3, BMW’s first model to be fully driven by electric power, will be a Sports Activity Vehicle that will boast the same functionality and comfort of all BMWs. The iX3 uses the fifth generation of the BMW eDrive technology. eDrive groups the electric motor, transmission, and power electronics in a separate electric drive, all of which are powered by new and more powerful batteries. The result is improved performance, increased operating range, lower weight, and greater space and flexibility. The engine will be capable of a maximum output of over 200 kW/270 hp. The high voltage batter has a capacity of over 70 kWh for an improved range of over 400 kilometers (249 miles). That battery can be charged in just 30 minutes at a fast-charging station generating up to 150 kW.
Because the eDrive is grouped the way it is, putting that system into new cars will be much simpler, thanks to BMW’s modular approach to construction. That’s great foresight, given the emphasis on moving to electric vehicles. That modular approach will make for quick conversion as electric vehicles start to become more readily available and requested. That’s smart thinking on BMW’s part, but, then, what would you expect from a car company with a reputation like BMW’s?
