Sport: ESPN, Netflix "Double-Team" on Jordan Biopic

Ask ten NBA fans to name the greatest player of all time, and a good seven of them will say “Michael Jordan” without hesitation. And who could blame them? After all, Jordan was the quintessential NBAstar, who dominated the game in every conceivable way. As if that wasn’t enough, he also changed the sports industry itself, which isn’t even to mention his influence on branding, entertainment and marketing. Oh, and did we mention that he led the Chicago Bulls to three consecutive championships on two separate occasions in the 1990s? Indeed, it’s no wonder that ESPN and Netflix are making “The Last Dance”, a ten-hour documentary that will focus on Jordan’s two mind-blowing championship runs.
Now is definitely a great time for a Michael Jordan documentary. For starters, the man made history in any number of ways. Furthermore, between ESPN’s “30 for 30” series, and Netflix’s own success releasing documentaries, the medium itself is–like Jordan in the 90s–at the top of its game. Should the documentary decide to broaden its net to cover Jordan’s life in full, one would imagine that ten hours might not even suffice.
Produced by Mandalay Sports Media in conjunction with NBA Entertainment and Jordan’s Jump.23, “The Last Dance” will feature new interviews with Air Jordan himself, as well as interviews with plenty of other important NBA figures. Meanwhile, the filmmakers have gained access to over 500 hours of unseen footage from the 1997-1998 championship run alone. Like the 1988 Slam Dunk Contest, or any one of the Bulls’ championship games, this one is not to be missed.
