Business: JAMAICAN ENERGY COMPANY MAKING "GREEN WAVES" WITH NEW MICROTURBINE TECHNOLOGY

Jamaican integrated energy company Innovative Energy Company (IEC) is reporting early success with the microturbine systems manufactured by California-based Capstone Turbine  Corporation, for which it is the exclusive Distributor and Authorized Service Provider for Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Bahamas, Haiti, and Turks & Caicos.

At a meeting at the company's headquarters on Friday (Aug 17) to formally sign the exclusive distributor agreement, IEC chief executive Nigel Davy said that four projects totalling nearly 400 kw had been implemented to date, and that several more were in the pipeline for development.

These include two at the Couples Negril resort involving a 65 kw turbine to provide electricity and a related project to provide hot water for the hotel's laundry department. The exhaust from the Capstone microturbines, he explained,  is captured using heat exchangers to provide hot water, thus generating a savings for the resort.  Also in the hotel sector,  IEC  installed a 200kw power generation system for Jewels Resort and in the food industry, the company is operating a 65-kw power generation system at sauces and condiments maker Walkerswood Caribbean Foods in St. Ann.

Innovative whose team has over 30 years of experience in the private energy industry, has developed, financed, constructed and operated over twenty energy projects in the United States, Central America and Jamaica with a total capital cost of over US$800 million. The main thrust of the company, Davy says is to "provide clean energy solutions through the development of hybrid renewable co-generation and tri-generation microturbine projects."Mr Davy said the Capstone system is ideal for Hotels. manufacturing plants, schools and universities, large offices and Wastewater Treatment  facilities among others

IEC provides energy audits, project development, construction, operations and asset management services. Where required, IEC provides “Performance Contracting” services, where it makes the investment in the product and recovers this investment from the savings derived from the project it implements, making the project “budget neutral” to the client.

Innovative became the exclusive distributor for Capstone in 2017. Darren Jamison, President and CEO of Capstone. who along with Sales Director Juan Musseri was in Jamaica for the signing, said the company chose to partner with IEC based on "proven knowledge of the local and regional market, professionalism and clear integrity," adding "we're very pleased to have IEC as our partner and we're confident that Nigel and his excellent team will deliver tremendous growth for us in this region."

Capstone is the world's leading manufacturer of "clean-and-green" microturbine power generation systems with over 10,000 turbines deployed across the world  - with millions of documented runtime hours - representing over 80% market share. The company was first to market with its innovative and award-winning high efficiency “air bearing” technology - which has only one moving part and uses no oil, grease or liquid coolant. IEC now has 7 Capstone microturbines in Jamaica, with over 980 additional units deployed in the Caribbean and Latin America region.
