Movies: Loads of moviegoers lured "Into the Spiderverse"

Sony Pictures Entertainment had its second Spider-Man hit of the year over the weekend, as Hollywood gears up for some of its most important weeks of business.
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse” collected a healthy $35.4 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to preliminary studio estimates, while Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule” opened well and “Mortal Engines” took its place among the major bombs of the year.
Hollywood is entering the busiest weeks in moviegoing, when holiday breaks allow weekday grosses to perform like a Saturday night. Movies that appear to open modestly during this time can ride out the holiday corridor and emerge a hit.
That is what Sony is hoping is the case with “Spider-Man,” a critically acclaimed animated installment in the comic-book universe. Sony’s hit Spider-Man spinoff, “Venom,” has grossed more than $850 million world-wide since opening in October.
“They’re very different films,” said Adrian Smith, head of domestic distribution at Sony Corp.’s studio. “We look at [Into the Spider-Verse] as playing to families.”
“Spider-Verse” had a budget of about $90 million.
