"...to the bang-bang boogie say up jumped the boogie to the rhythm of the boogiedy beat"
- Rapper's Delight, Sugar Hill Gang
Up jumped the
boogie not
caring who it
hit nor who stood
in the way
A summer day brought
notice of a new sound to
drown out the in coherent
cacophony of
ideological conflict
and unlike the politics this
movement confined its fighting
to words and rhythm
hurled like spears and matched
by arms and feet
flailing high-stepping twisting turning out
stories
of Police harassment
and racial profiling
and redlined sub-standard
housing
Of street philosophers
espousing the seemingly simplistic
themes
of love and unity
that have stumped the "experts"
for generations
before and since
Cops still planting
evidence
white criminals get lighter
sentence
fro the same crime
Politicians not tryin' to do
the time
yet lyin' at the drop
of a dime
Hip-hop the first
shot
in the final phase
of the Revolution
fully televised
worldwide
corporate barons
sensing the tide
going out
and rushing
to reduce the
juice
inthe word
turn rebels into
gangstas
deflect the message with
slurs - nigga bitch ho -
thinking none of the youth will
know
the difference but they
do
More and more come to understand
that even when it sounds
playful
its staking a stand
so whutchyougon' do
today?
cause we bringin' the beat
we ain't come to
play
