Business: Grace Kennedy Weighs Bitcoin Wallet

Conglomerate Grace Kennedy is weighing the addition of a Bitcoin option to its recently introduced GK MPay mobile wallet.

GK CEO Don Wehby says the company is still in the exploratory stage and hints that the move is part of  response to boost and widen the usage of the MPay wallet, of which is currently stalled on mobile air time top-up. "The most popular use for GK MPay at the moment is purchasing phone credit. It's a simple, convenient and cost effective way to buy credit for any mobile provider and any person who needs credit be it you the user or someone else," Wehby told the Jamaica Gleaner in October.

Bitcoin, the best known of the present crypto-currencies has had a fairly volatile ride, registering huge gains and substantial corrections over the past three years.

A Caribbean bitcoin, CARICOIN is reportedly in the works, while ONECOIN, developed by a Hungarian-born German financial analyst is in preliminary stages , with Jamaicans and others buying tokens in an MLM set-up ahead of its expected official launch late 2018.
