Sports broadcasting legend Dick Enberg, known for catchphrases like “Touch ‘em all” and “Oh, my!” died Thursday morning in La Jolla, Calif. He was 82.
Over his nearly 60-year career, Enberg worked for NBC, CBS and ESPN and covered professional baseball, professional football, and Wimbledon tennis, including multiple World Series and eight Super Bowls. He ended his career as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Padres, spending seven seasons with the club before his 2016 retirement.
Born in Mount Clemens, Mich., Enberg attended Central Michigan University, where he played baseball and first worked in broadcasting. He would later attend graduate school at Indiana University, and eventually became the play-by-play announcer for Indiana’s football and basketball teams. He moved to California in 1961, working as an assistant professor and baseball coach at Cal State Northridge, until he became a full-time broadcaster beginning with a stint at KTLA.
In honor of his long career, he won the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Gowdy Award in 1995, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Rozelle Award in 1999, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Award in 2015
