Poetry: DENDRO-NATION

Robust cacti raise
thorny hands to the sky
even as
their once vibrant
flowers
now strew the summer
grass
like burnt offerings
Stately palms and majestic
firs
preen and survey like the
hawks
which perch atop them
Queen poincianas parade
their crimson and ochre
crowns
beckoning sun-stroked travellers to hear
secrets of
romance
and intrigue
beneath their wilful
shade
Stumps protrude like
monuments
to the fallen their tops bearing the elegant
concentrics
of the cosmos
emerald pears taste
the ripening
sun while
ebony ackee seeds peep
out of their ruby pods
Of those that have not yet
seen the saw there is
one
more imperious
more robust more
virile
than the rest
Jagged scars round its base
speaking to a
history
of attempted ousters
Yet it
stands
triumphantly muscular
green leaves fluttering
some forming
a largely ignored garland
to the curving
road
below
