Poetry: GOOD AIRS

Even
the crazy old lady with
the cat in the
box
gets a pass
now
as young wage slaves
with lights in their
hats
punch up the purchased
delights
of the season
Hams and cakes
by the score
sorrel and rum
make their yearly alliance
and the striped seduction
of candy canes [and gummy bears]
makes kids dance
the sellers
of games of chance
close their windows
for the holidays
leaving some to
fete others
to fume
both knowing that
soon
the numbers fun will
resume
with new millionaires to be minted
cruising along in
posh cars
tinted widows closed
for scurity
no time to notic the
poinsettias
coming to full
maturity
attention now turned
to hair nails and
gowns
as otherwise sane
women
turn the sartorial brinkmanship
up
to greet the New Year by
getting down
