Movies: The Films of Summer 2018

he summer movie season has gotten off to a historic start in 2018, thanks to the record-shattering debut of Avengers: Infinity War and the subsequent premieres of Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Nonetheless, that’s merely the beginning of what promises to be an immensely crowded next few months at the multiplex—beginning in June. Between a star-studded heist film, a long-awaited animated superhero sequel, and a return to the dino-mayhem of Jurassic Park—moviegoers should have plenty of options to keep them busy (and satisfied) for the foreseeable future.

Action Point (June 1)

Johnny Knoxville brings Jackass-style stunts to a fictional story about a poorly run water park (based, in large part, on New Jersey’s Action Park) in this outrageous comedy.

American Animals (June 1)

Evan Peters and Barry Keoghan are childhood friends who plot to steal a collection of rare books and prints in this heist film from director Bart Layton.

Hereditary (June 8)

Toni Collette is a mom unraveling at the seems in the wake of her own mother’s death (among other tragedies) in this heavily hyped supernatural thriller.

Ocean’s 8 (June 8)

Playing the sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean, Sandra Bullock assembles a team —including Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, and Mindy Kaling—to steal a $150 million necklace from the Met Gala in this all-star continuation of the popular franchise.

Hearts Beat Loud (June 8)

The summer before she goes off to college, a teenage girl teams up with her father to form a band in this feel-good indie starring Kiersey Clemons and Nick Offerman.

For her first fictional feature since 2010’s Winter’s Bone, Debra Granik enlists Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie for this story about a father and teenage daughter living off the grid in the Pacific Northwest.
